WAIKATO VALUES

FIRMNESS CONTINUES READY COMPETITION . UPWARD IN BEEF Firmness in the Waikato stock market continues and everything seeking realisation finds competitors in readiness. The fat stock branches are fairly well supplied and in beef at any rate the tendency is upward. -"Mutton is no more than holding its own and at the central yards this week failed to do that. Chilled beef is offering in fair quantity and is being moved fairly fast. According to report some excellent lines are being handled and are giving satisfaction to all concerned. Boners are in strong demand and in this-class it is remarkable how condition has been maintained. In spite of the long milking season thin animals are rare. Supplies in the store cattle section are very meagre, but the search becomes stronger daily. An extensive line of station cows in calf was exhibited at Morrinsville last week and drew an interested assembly of graziers.' The long trip had left its mark and although vendors seemed dissatisfied with results the blame could not justly be attributed to buyers, who dealt generously throughout. Conditions in the separate sections are:— BEEF The quality of the ox beef at'Frankton this week was a marked improvement on the customary display and buyers showed appreciation. A fairly heavy entry was transferred readily and for light-weights rather higher levels ruled. The strength and extent of export competition for Jersey beef leaves room for the better grade of cow beef and the butchers' offering at Frankton this week made a more attractive display. Competition throughout was keen and a slight advance was recorded. Runners and vealers were firm at current_rates; prime ox sold to 32s Gd; ordinary, '_'7s to 20s; prime heifer, 2is to 30s; young cow, 24s to 2<s; Jersey cows, 22s to 235; rough, ISs to 21s; runners, to £5 vealers, from 10s to £2 155..

MUTTON A heavy entry at the central yards this week made trade mpre difficult and in wethers especially there was a distinct easing. When wethers rose in April to £2, winter values of £2 "10.3 and better were freely predicted and will, not unlikely, yet be reached, but for the past two months they have been difficult to support. Ewes on the contrary, which at the date mentioned were quoted at 124s to 255, have consistently hardened and have narrowed the then existing margin of 15s down to about 6s. Competition for these at Frankton this week was steady though the highest rates were for exceptionally good sheep. Lambs also seemed a little easier. Heavy wethers sold to 37s Gd; medium, 33s to 355; plain, from 31s; heavy ewes, to 30s Gd: medium, 24s to 26s Gd; light, from 21s 6d; unfinished, from 17s Gd; best lambs, to 345; others, from 20s, according to weight and quality. STORE CATTLE A wider interest in this section was aroused by an entry of station cows in calf, ex Poverty Bay, at the Morrinsville yards on Friday. Evidence of the long journey was plainly visible, but however much it may have " detracted from their value since the commencement of the trip it did not rob them of the competition due at the conclusion. An average of about £6 15s clearly indicates this: For local offerings in this section values are risine, empty heifers especially making a rapid advance. Young cows are wanted, but hard to buy in any quantity. Competition for boners see ns to grow keener. STORE SHEEP Fair supjilies are coming forward and generally meeting with fair competition, although there is not the same eagerness as applies to cattle. The inquiry for ewes in lamb is not extensive and enthusiasm is often difficult to arouse. White-face hoggets are in good demand when available. Ewes at Morrinsville making from 35s to 38s with wethers from 21s to 235; forward black-face lambs are worth from 15s to 19s; small, from 10s to 13s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The clearing sales which will be completed in another few weeks, continue to give satisfactory results. For yard sales Morrinsville and Te Awamutu seem to be the only centres that attract supplies and at these the business transacted each week is considerable. At ■ other yards the entries are small, in many instances not worth mention and it may safely be argued that the spring demand will see little to meet it. All big lines of heifers have been broken up and already it is difficult to procure truck lots near calving without recourse to the saleyards. Even there they are not plentiful. Values are similar to those recently quoted. PIGS Very eager competition follows all fat classes wherever offered. Supplies are low in all centres. At Frankton this week up to £3 ISs was secured for the best. Porkers from 32s to £2 15s. Store pigs also sell well everywhere.
