THE BUILDING TRADE
GREAT ACTIVITY IN DUNEDIN [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Wednesday Building permits issued by tho City Corporation for June numbered 8G and were valued at £JB,CS2, as compared with 76 and £37,007 for tho corresponding period last year. Since tho beginning of tho financial year (April 1) 267 permits valued at £158,036 have been issued, compared with 227 and £118,345 for tho same three months in 1936.
To a largo extent tho increased values aro duo to a riso in building costs, but building activity is showing lio sign of slackening off. As a matter of fact it would appear that tho trade in Dunedin is busier than in any of tho other main centres, for May permits issued for work in tho city wero valued at £58,741, against £39,968 for Auckland and £45,797 for Christchurch. The Wellington figures for the period aro not available, but for April tho total was £53,719.
