INCREASED SUBSIDY SOUGHT COUNCIL REFUSES REQUEST [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, "Wednesday An application that the Hamilton Borough Council's subsidy of £llOO to the Hamilton Beautifying Society be increased to £I4OO was received by the council this evening. The Beautifying Society wrote stating that it had expended £2289 during tho year, including £1062 of its own funds, £537 being for permanent improvements at Memorial Park and £525 for general maintenance. During the year the society raised £244, and it had to draw on its own reserves for £2BO for general maintenance. It was felt that this money should bo used only for permanent improvements. "What with the 40-hour week, higher wages, increased hospital and Fire Board allocation and other factors, this year is going to bo a very difficult one and an increase in rates seems unavoidable," said tho Mayor, Sir. J. R. Fow. "Tho society is doing great work, but the only reasonable thing to do is to refuse its request." A motion to that effect was carried. Tho Beautifying Society takes the place of a parks committee in most towns, and has charge of all tho parks and grass plots in Hamilton.
