THEFT CHARGE FAILS
"POLICE WITNESS, HAS LIED" OPINION OF MAGISTRATE [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] WHANGAREI, Wednesday "It is my opinion that one police witness has lied in his evidence, and the general demeanour and evidence of the defendant and his wife lead me to believe that they are quite honest and it is quite unlikely that there was any dishonesty," said Mr. G. N. Morris, 5.M.,-at tha Police Court to-day, when dismissing a charge of stealing 90ft. of galvanised iron piping, valued at £1 13s 9d, the property of the Crown Lands Department, preferred against William Allan Jones, farmer, of Poroti. . The hearing was commenced on June 28, when tho magistrate dismissed a similar' charge against the defendant concerning 900 ft, of piping. Tho magistrate intimated to-day that tho defendant's contention that thero had been ill-feeling beween certain witnesses and himself seemed to havo a suspicion of truth.
