MANY SHIPS IN PORT

NINE OVERSEAS VESSELS RAIN DELAYS CARGO WORK POSTPONEMENT OF SAILINGS Five overseas ships berthed at the Auckland wharves yesterday morning and gave Harbour Board and Customs officials a busy period. As a result of the influx and delay in departures owing to rain, tho exceptionally large number of nine overseas vessels are in port.

The five vessels which berthed yesterday were the Hamburg-Amerika steamer Gera, from New Orleans, the Federal Lino steamer Cornwall, from Liverpool, the Yamashita Kisen Kaisha Line steamer Chifuku Maru, from Miike, Japan, the Union Company steamer Waiotapu, from the Pacific Coast, and the Union Company motorship Matua, from Rarotonga. Any hopes entertained for a quick start in discharge of cargo yesterday were speedily dispelled, as steady drizzling rain continued practically throughout the day. As a result, little work was carried out on the wharves. It was found impossible to complete loading the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro and her departure for London was postponed until tonight, two days late. The sailing for Wellington of the British India steamer Nardana was also affected, being delayed until to-day. The Port Line steamer Port Wellington, to sail for Wellington, has been delayed until tomorrow.

As a result of the rain, numerous alterations have been made in the schedules of the Northern Steamship Company's fleet, and other coastal vessels have been similarly affected.
