LONDON, May 8 The Barcelona correspondent of the Times says sanity and quiet have returned and the public forces are in command of the situation. The workers are listening to their leaders and are laying down their arms and are returning to work. Both sides are agreeing to forget strike bitterness in order to ensure the unity of the workers. The death roll is estimated at more than 200 and the number of wounded 400. The Spanish Embassy in London states that absolute order now j prevails in Catalonia. The Basque command "has ordered the mobilisation of all men between 20 and 45 to assist in building fortifications. Ceruere anarchists, aided by militia and the garrison of San Fernando fortress, seized Figueras, near the French frontier. They have also taken over the functions of the municipal ; government in Gerona. REFUGEES LANDED TWO VESSELS IN FRANCE REBELS DENY MINE-LAYING PARIS, May 7 Refugees from Bilbao —2273 children and 210 old peoples-were disembarked to-day at La Pallice from the vessel Habana. The steam yacht Goizeko Izarra arrived at Pauillac with 319 refugees, including 153 children. The insurgent authorities deny having left floating mines to imperil the safety of refugee vessels. RELIEF COMMITTEE APPEAL TO AID CHILDREN (Received May 9, 6.40 p.m.) LONDON, May 9 The National Joint Committee for Spanish relief, in letters to Mr. Baldwin, Mr. J. A. Lyons, Mr. M. J. Savage and other Dominion Prime Ministers, appealed for support to bring 40,000 children to London from Bilbao and support for the body's protest to Geneva against the bombing of Guernica.
