HEAD-ON CRASH

MOTOR-CAR AND TRAM FOUR PERSONS INJURED £** VEHICLE COMPLETELY WRECKED 1 VICTIMS' SERIOUS CONDITION Four persons were seriously injured when a motor-car in which they were travelling, an old touring model, collided head-on with a city-bound tram on the Great South Road near the Dilworth School about ten minutes after midnight on Saturday. Three of the four who were in the car were thrown on to the road and all were taken to the Auckland Hospital. None of the passengers in the tram was injured. The following were injured:— Cyril Francis Green, aged 32, of 17 Robert Street, Ellerslie, head injuries, serious. ! Frederick Lindblom, aged 32, electrician, of 82 Newton Road; head injuries, serious. Ivy Cavenett, aged 40, married, of 11 Ruskin Street, Parnell; head injuries, very serious. Edna Salisbury, aged 2-j, single, factory worker, of 13 Arnold Street, Mount Eden; head injuries, serious. Severity of Impact The motor-car was completely wrecked and so severe was' the impact [ that the engine was forced back several ! feet through the floor boards into the driver's compartment. The bonnet and front portion was a shapeless wreck. Seats were thrown out on to the road, doors were torn off and the hood "collapsed. Glass and other portions of the car were strewn across the road from kerb to kerb and the vehicle was so badly broken up that it was imjjossibla to tow it away. It was dragged to the side of the road and left there until morning. ' Very little damage was done to the tram. The front bumper was slightly dented as well as the front of the motorman's cab, and the windscreen and lamp were smashed. The motorman escaped uninjured, but the conductor was thrown half the length of the tram and twisted his back. HowOver, he was not in need of medical attention. The passengers in the tram escaped with a severe shaking. Throng ol Spectators The scene of the accident was soon thronged with several hundred people, including women in evening frocks returning from dances and parties, while residents near by came ®but in pyjamas and dressing-gowns to render assistance. A working bee was formed and for half an hour the members wera engaged in clearing the road. The St. John Ambulance was .called by the tram conductor, but one Of the women was taken to hospital by car before the arrival of the ambulances. Two ambulances arrived on the 'scene, one taking one of the injured to the Auckland Hospital, the other taking the remaining two. At a late hour last night neither Mrs. Cavenett nor Mr. Green had recovered consciousness, and although Miss Salisbury and Mr. Lindblom were conscious their condition was reported to be still serious. A male occupant of one of the motorcare was treated for head injuries by Dr. A. G. Waddell, of Hamilton, but was able to go home afterward. No one else was hurt.
