ZANE GREY CAMP

PURCHASE CONTEMPLATED NEW AUCKLAND COMPANY A report that the leasehold of Zane Grey's camp at Otehei Bay, Russell, had been acquired by Mr. G. J. Hassall, assistant manager of Johnstone's Blue Motors, Limited, and Mr. A. N. Cooper, of Auckland, was contradicted yesterday by .-Mr. Hassall. He admitted that negotiations were in train with a view to acquiring the camp but nothing so far had been finalised. "Mr. Cooper and myself are forming a company with that end in view," said Mr. Hassall. "but it is premature to say that the leasehold has been purchased." The necessary capital for the purchase of the leasehold had been raised within the Empire. "A wealthy American tourist, Mr. Wendall Anderson, had expressed interest in the venture," continued Mr. Hassall. "He was greatly impressed with the camp and its facilities for deep-sea fishing and on learning that I was interested in- the camp Mr. Anderson suggested that a part of it be leased to him." This had been agreed to and it was Mr. Anderson's intention to erect a small cottage on the site in keeping with the existing buildings where he could return each year or when he wished to enjoy the sport offering. Commenting on his reported intention to develop the camp, Mr. Hassall said that there was very little needed in that direction.

The camp, which is located about seven miles from Russell, was first brought into prominence by Mr. Zane Grey about 10 years ago. The famous American novelist and deep-sea fisherman made it the background for his well-known book. "Anglers' Eldorado," and the publicity given to the camp by Zane Grey has resulted in many overseas tourists visiting the district.
