NAZIS IN DANZIG

PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY

MAY ALTER CONSTITUTION

(Received May 6, 5.5 p.m.) DANZIG, May 5 The Nazis have now secured the necessary two-thirds majority in the Danzig Parliament to enable them to alter the Constitution of the Free City into any form of State, although they cannot alter the status of Danzig in relation to foreign Powers, which is guaranteed under statute registered with the League of Nations.

Three members of the Opposition in the Danzig Diet went over to the Nazi Party oil March 15, thus giving the party 46 seats out of a total of 72. Thus only two more seats were required to give the two-thirds majority necessary, according to League statute, to change the jCoustitution. At tho election on April 7, 1935, the National Socialists gained 44 seats, the Socialists 12. the Roman Catholic Centre 9, the German Nationalists 3, the Communists 2 and the Poles 2.
