SHORTER WEEK
EMPLOYEES IN FRANCE SHOPS CLOSED FOR TWO DAYS ENFORCEMENT BY DECREE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 5, 5.45 p.m.) PARIS, April 4 All shops in the city except those selling food were closed to-day and are closing to-morrow owing to a decree enforcing the 40-hour week. Similar arrangements will continue in future. Sunday will be the general closing day all over France in towns of over 10,000 inhabitants, but a second day will be chosen according to local needs. In the banks and the Stock Exchange the 40-hour week begins on April 12 and they will close on Saturdays and Sundays. Another decree prohibits employers in restaurants, amusements and transport concerns demanding payment from their employees or withholding part of their wages, thus eliminating the practice of workers buying employment and subsisting solely on tips.
