"TRULY A VAGABOND"
LABOURER SENT TO GAOL
As a result of attempting to beg money from a detective in Newmarket on Sunday, Joseph Hunter Montgomery, labourer, aged 65, appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday charged with being idle and disorderly in that he placed himself in a public place for the purpose of begging alms. The detective gave evidence that accused had asked him for 2d, and then had continued to ask for money about five times. His breath smelt strongly of methylated spirits, and lie was under the influence of liquor, "Ho is an old offender and is addicted to drinking methylated spirits," said Detective-Sergeant McHugn.
"This man for many years has been idle and drunken," said the magistrate. "Ho is really and truly a vagabond." He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
