POPULATION NEEDS
MORE PEOPLE WANTED DEVELOPMENT OF RESOURCES "I am satisfied that the population of New Zealand must increase rapidly," said the Hon. E. J. Mackrell, Minister of Labour in Victoria, in an interview in Invercargill at the week-end. "New Zealand is, of course, a primary producing country, but it is nevertheless beginning to develop its manufacturing industries," he said. "It is a rich country and its potentialities are not by any means fully developed. There is room for a considerably bigger population. and I think British people would readily come here if they only knew of New Zealand's possibilities, notwithstanding that it is England's antipodes and the cost of transportation of primary products to the world's markets is very great. "I do not know what your immigration laws are, but I have no doubt that desirable people who would 110t.be a drag on the country and would not swell the ranks of the unemployed would be welcomed as an asset to the Dominion. Since I have been here I have found that the people appear to be prosperous and I believe that it would be to the general advantage of the Dominion if controlled immigration of the right type of settler were carried out."
