DIAMOND WEDDING
PONSONBY RESIDENTS MR. AND MRS. H. PHILLIPS The diamond wedding anniversary of two old Auckland identities, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Phillips, of Ponsonbv, will be celebrated to-day. Mrs. Phillips' parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James McLellan, arrived in Auckland in the Jane Gilford in 1842, while Mr. Phillips' mother arrived in Wellington in 1840 and his father in 1847. Mr. Phillips was born in Lower Hutt in 1852, and Mrs. Phillips in Lower Hutt in 1857. Both came to Auckland with their parents in 1858, and neither have been out of New Zealand for 25 years. 1 Mr. Phillips was a well-known blacksmith. and farmer, and when failing health caused him to retire in 1902 he became caretaker at the Teachers Training College, remaining in that position for 23 vears, after which he retired in 1932 to Paget Street, Ponsonby. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips have been members of the Baptist Tabernacle for over 54 years, having first been associated with the old Wellesley Street church. In his young days Mr. Phillips was a runner for the New Zealand Herald. Of their family one son was lost in the Great War. Another son, Air* Thomas Phillips, resides at Grey Lynn, and there are three daughters, Mrs. J. Parsons, Mrs. H. B. Martin and Mrs. C. W. Lambourne. There are 13 grandchildren and one great-grand-child.
