WORK OF Y.W.C.A.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION A NEW APPOINTMENT A meeting of tho board of directors of the Auckland Young Women's Christian Association was held recently and was opened by a devotional service conducted Hy the Rev. 10. T. Olds. The president and board members welcomed Miss Davina Bates, the new girls' work secretary. Miss Bates conies with a varied experience of work from New Plymouth and Christchurch, and extensive plans for the development of work with girls between tho ages of 12 and 16 are bVing considered.

Reports wore presented from the various committees concerning plans for the year, and reports of a very successful conference day held on March 16 were received. It was decided, owing to the tremendous interest now being taken in physical education, that health education should be emphasised in all departments during this year. and, with this end in view, tlio services of a health and recreation director have been procured. Miss Jean Harmsworth, a graduate of the Swords Club, Sydney, lias been appointed, and will take up her duties early in May. Reports from both hostel committees showed that there was an increasing demand for accommodation for young people coming to the city, ' both for purposes of study and employment. Plans were discussed as to the possibilities of meeting this need. The newly-formed Halycon Club presented its programme for the year. Plans were presented by the membership committee for a membership campaign among the outer suburbs. To allow for more democratic planning among the association activities, an allasscciation council will bo formed.

The employment department reported an increasing demand, not only for domestic help, but also for shop and factory assistance. Much worth-while work in regard to placement was being done by tho department, but the need for domestic workers could onty be met by an increase in the number of girls seeking employment in this way, stated the report. A service was held on Easter Sunday as a preliminary to tho Sunday services throughout the year.
