RAPID RISE TO FAME MESTOR AVON'S SYDNEY CUF» MANANUI AND WOTAN FAIL Li'Jio.w ouit own corkkspondknt] SYDNEY, March 30 The Sydney Cup winner Mestor Avon only three weeks ago was eligible for £35 novice handicaps. Tho Sydney Cup ended a sequence of three wins, the £-1700 first prize being valuable indeed for such a performer. Mestor Avon won because lie was tho best stayer with the pull in the weights, for his 7.3, including a 101b. penalty for Rosehill and Warwick Farm wins, was luxurious. He was in the middle of tho field early, began his run at six furlongs and, hardridden down the straight, was easily the best at the finish. He is a plain and angular brown six-year-old gelding by Poly mestor. Unfortunately, tho morning after the cup, Mestor Avon picked np a nail when at walking exorcise at Randwick.

J. A. Shaw, one of Sydney's most spectacular bookmakers, was the biggest winner over the Sarcherie-Mestor Avon double, but his £II,OOO win was whittled down to half that sum by his outlay on other horses, insuring his cup prospects and his course business on Mestor Avon. However, success for either King's Head or Pamelus in the Poncaster Handicap would have been more profitable.

Although the cup field was regarded as very moderate, the pace was run at such a clipping pace that Wotan's twomile record survived by only half a second. Wotan gave a miserable display, tailing off from the start and staying last all through. His form in the Autumn Plate on Saturday was so poor that generally it was surprising he was started, and oven more surprising that ho was backed to a fairly short price. Once again the Limond horse Mananui was cup favourite, but he was in ono of his surliest moods, and at no stage did ho look like a winner. Ho has been a complete frost lately, and has cost his connections and the publi.c a small fortune.

Altunga beat the weight-for-age horses in a good finish in the Autumn Plate, running down Lough Neagh and holding off Orb. Allunga was in front in the Sydney Cup with a furlong to go, and looked a winner, but ho weakened badly, and missed a place.

R. Skelton, a successful owner and trainer under pony rules, won two races on Master Monday at Randwick. Both of his winners wore two-year-olds, Yashmak taking the Easter Plate, of £IOOO, and Dark Stain, a division of the Wontworth Handicap. Yashvnak is a very lightly-built filly by Veilmond, but much better than she looks, for she beat a good field.
