NOTES ON RUNNING

SANDY BIX SCORES TIP TOES BEATS ERNDALE TYBALT IN WINNING FORM The locally-trained horses Tip Toes and Erndalo were best supported for the 1? use bank Handicap, and .the.v finished first a>hl second. The winner. Tit) Toes, had previously run several good races, and she was well ridden bv H. Goldfinch, to come homo strongly after running about when the pressure was applied near the distance. Tip Toes is a daughter of the Great Northern Oaks winner Danae, and she seems to be becoming more solid. The unlucky lirndale ran another lino race, and his turn should come. His rider appeared just a trifle confident when in front at the distance. Hutnna, the half-brother, by Ruapapa, to Awarere, showed signs of improvement and battled on solidly for third. Bass, who drew No. 14 at the harrier, shaped creditably. Aero Queen displayed speed, but failed to run on. School Song went very fast after getting badly away and it was not surprising that he tired quickly. Favourite Unplaced The favourite. Modern Maid, missed a place in the Avondalo Hurdles, which was won by the second fancy Sandy Dix. Modern Maid flattered the hopes of her supporters by running in a leading position for slightly more than a mile, but she gave no trouble in tlio final stages. Sandy Dix was assisted to victory by liis line fencing anil made complete amends for his failure to complete tho course in the Brighton Hurdles at Kllcrslie. Sandrift was responsible for most of tho running and was in front with the winner at the last fence, only to tiro into third plate. Rozel shaped well for a beginner and looks a good prospect for the hunters' class. Black Marlin had his first race for some months and was never prominent.

The little-fancied Trouvaille brought off a surprise in the Chevalier Handicap, paying over a, score. Trouvaille was running third when the field entered the straight and he ran on attractively in the last furlong, recording ono of his best performances. The judge at first hoisted Surelhi's number as second, but soon altered the four to I t and rightly awarded the placing to JJronzette, who showed improvement anil registered her best effort to date. Valamito, who did not have the best of luck, finished last for third and Merial, although she came right out to the outside in the straight, was a good fourth. Surella and Glen Abb both ran fine races, the latter having none the best of the running m the straight. Dutch Girl and Te Bronev were going on sit the finish <ind may £0 better over a longer journey. Foley Memorial Contest Another surprise was provided when Master Bricrly won tho Foley Memorial Handicap at double figures. Contrary to his usual custom of getting in the rear in the earlv stages. Master J3rierly spoil took a'forward position and was in front over half a mile from home, to remain there in spite of strong ch al- - from Sinking 1 una and Talkie. The winner was well ridden bv A. Tinker, whose move in taking hun into a good position when the pace was slow early was wise. Sinking Fund was third to'last after going two furlongs and made a fine effort to get second. Gay Talkie also ran right up to Ins best form and disputed every inch o\er the last furlong. Knight of Australia was a good fourth, and Royal Appellant, well back at the half-mile, was closer in fifth position at the finish than at any other stage. Mazir looked a likely place-getter when he loomed up on the outside, at the distance, but he was unable to get up. Shy made a dash inside tho distance, but he also weakened. Gav Hose faded in the straight. Tho supporters of the Oakley Hancurap favourite Highborn were doomed to disappointment when his rider was unseated shortly after the start. The mishap was accidental and appeared to be due to Highborn becoming squeezed between War Picture and Son of tho Soil. The race proved a triumph for the top-weight, Airam, who conceded over two stone to each of her opponents, and won well. She was again troublesome at the post but eventually got away fairly smartly. The improving Aero King, who has had several setbacks, finished resolutely to get second, and his turn should come. Son of the Soil displayed speed, hut weakened near the end, although he battled j on for third. Tho form of the others was not impressive, but Romani shaped creditably for one who was having his first race. Fe looks a colt with possibilities A Ploasing Performance Having his first start in open company, Orate recorded a pleasing performance to win tho Railway Handicap, for which he was second in demand to lmpasto. Orato jumped out cleanly from No. 2 and was always in the lead, going on strongly and winning well when challenges were issued m the last furlong. Orate is a very smart beginner and is an improver likely to win more races. Tray Bit made a fine showing for second and Triune put in good work in the straight to get third. King Neptune looked likely when he was just behind the winner at the distance, but ho weakened slightly near the post and could finish only fourth. The favourite, lmpasto, gave no trouble, and Diatomous tired in the last furlong after being prominent throughout. Golden Sheila and Lady Kyra were running on at the finish. Prince Acre failed to reproduce his Kllerslie form but should not bo discredited for the defeat. The Whau Handicap provided a line finish, and the fourth fancy, BlackMusk, just prevailed. Acting better on the firm track than he did in the soft going at Ellerslie, Black Musk was always well placed and finished gamely under pressure. He is a big three-year-old who should show further improvement as he ages. Bonny Glow was near the rear most of the journey, but she secured a fine run through on the rails in the straight and made up a lot of ground to get second. King .lheo made n determined effort on tho outside _ in the straight but could not get up. Calcutta ran a good race for fourth. Prince Rangi and Tutor finished close up and did well enough to indicate that they may win soon. Win For It. W. McTavish

The favourite, Star Artist, failed to finish closer than fourth in tho Tit.irangi Handicap, which 'lvbalt won in goocl stylo. Tybalt was handily placed on the rails and when the straight was reached he came through to win well, even though he had to stall off a determined challenge from Crooning, who finished very fast after being last into the straight. Tybalt was well ridden by R. W. McTavish, who gained his first success after an enforced absence from tho saddle with a knee injury received when riding Tonncrre in the Haihvay Handicap at Ellerslie. The injury prevented jNlcTavish from riding for three months, and it was pleasing to see success come his way. Crooning's finishing effort was good, and Legatee also made a good showing for third. RETURN FROM SYDNEY NEW ZEALAND HORSES SYDNEY, April :) The Awatcn, which sailed for Wellington last evening, had on board the racehorses Wotan, Lo Grand and Cuddle.
