AVONDALE SURPRISES

FAVOURITES FAIL

ONLY ONE SUCCESSFUL OUTSIDER TAKES HANDICAP MASTER BRIERLY TRIUMPHS VICTORY FOR TROUVAILLE Surprise victories by Master Brierly and Trouvaille were features of the opening of the Avondale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting on Saturday, when Tip Toes was the only favourite to win. The conditions for racing were good, tho weather being fine and tho track in excellent order, and there were some very close finishes. One of the best contesis was provided by the chief event, tho Foley Memorial Handicap, and the veteran Master Brierly scored narrowly from Sinking Fund and Gay Talkie. Usually Master Brierly becomes badly placed in the early stages of his races, but on this occasion he was in front inore than half a mile from home and answered all demands in the straight, even though he came well away from the rails when the pressure was applied. The open sprint was won by the second fancy Orate, who won from end to end. The line weather attracted a large attendance and the additional stand accommodation recently completed was much appreciated. Tho totalisator handled £37,837, compared with £25,023 on the first day last year, an increase of £12,814. Results:
