HOLMES [rv telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of W. Holmes, at the age of 56 years. Holmes was known throughout Xew Zealand as one of the most accomplished riders of his day and received a thorough education under R. J. Mason. When Mr. G. G. Stead had a very strong team Holmes was second horseman to the stable, R. Perrett being flic first. Holmes was only a light-weight when riding, and even in later years did not scale more than eight stone. The most important races he won included the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes on Tolstoi, C.J.C. Oaks on Gladsome, Canterbury Cup on Multiform, Winter Cup on Spider, Great Autumn Handi- j cap on Gold Leaf, C.J.C. Champagne Stakes on Screw Gun and I'ormosan, I Dunedin Cup on Starshot, A.R.C. 1 I'oyal Stakes on Screw Gun, Hawke's j Hay Stakes on Multiform, and the j North Island Challenge Stakes on Screw Gun and Formosan. After he retired from active race riding Holmes still kept a live interest in horses and at one time took a number of horses and raced them at meetings in South America. In the Great War, Holmes saw service with the mounted regiments in Palestine and was invalided home. He _had been in ill-health for some time and his death was not unexpected.
