FAT STOCK SALES

PRICES AT WESTFIELD

LIMITED HOLIDAY SUPPLIES SHORTAGE IN MOST LINES Small entries and firm prices were the rule at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday. Cows were offered in the largest numbers, and best quality stock maintained the previous level of values, but inferior grades were as much as 7s 6d a head and Is per 1001b. easier. Heavy calves were a shade cheaper. Sheep, lambs and pigs were hardly sufficient to cope with butchers' requirements for the holidays. After the ample and fine-quality yarding of ox beef last week, the market was less lively, although the bidding showed 110 tendency to drop. Jt ranged to £l3 7s 6d for the best steers, averaging Ms per 1001b. The bulk of the, cow and heifer delivery consisted of weedy and inferior types, suitable as boners more than for any other purpose. The tlemand for this line was dull, and only the choicest sorts were easily quitted at up to £'lo 10s, which was slightly under the top bid of a week ago. Sheep and Pigs in Demand

Many sheep pens were empty. Quality suffered little in consequence, however, there bein# several attractive lines of heavy wethers, which sold to 35s 3d each, against tho best price of 31s last week. Prime maiden ewes provided the main transactions -in this section, and realised to 26s each, on a par with last week's bidding.Exporters were repeatedly outbid for a limited supply of lambs, in which there was only a small proportion of quality stock. Values were fully maintained, but unfinished lambs were inclined to ease toward the end of the sale.

Average quality was available in a medium offering of calves. A firm demand followed the sale from first to last, only the heaviest calves failing to realise recent prices by about 2s a head. Runners were traded to £5 and vealers to £'•! 18s, both lower quotations than those recorded at the last sale. Bern use of a greatly reduced entry of pigs, prices for baconers improved by about 3s a head, and porkers sold under steady competition at recent rates. Both sorts were quoted unchanged from s}d to ojjd per lb. Stores also brought good prices, the qualitv generally being very fair.
