SHOPLIFTING CHARGES
MARRIED WOMAN FINED EXPLANATION OFFERED Appearing beforo Mr. W. R. McKean, <S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, Hilda Bryant, married woman, aged 45, was fined £1 on threo charges of shoplifting. Accused, who was represented by Mr. Sullivan, pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector J. Fox, who prosecuted, said that accused was accosted b.v a shopwalker in a city store and wool was found in her possession. A search of her home revealed pairs of men's sox still marked with shop labels. Accused was the mother of four children, said counsel. For some months she had been suffering from brain fever and sometimes she had lapses. He asked for accused to bo placed on probation. "There is a suggestion, apart from the present charges, that she lias been stealing other tilings," said the magistrate.. "That might be expected with a mental disability, but I cannot place her on probation on that account."
