CENTENARIAN'S DEATH
MR. ANDREA BARRETIC H 70 YEARS IN WESTLAND [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HOKIANGA, Tuesday Ono of the oldest residents in New Zealand, Mr. Andrea Barretich, a
native of Dalmatia, died last night. Mr. Barretich was in his 103 rd year, and had lived in Westland for 70 years. He had no relatives in the Dominion. Mr. Barretich first settled in New Zealand when he deserted his ship, the barque Mermaid, from Newport, Wales, at Nelson, in 1864. Gold seeking appealed to him and he had worked various fields throughout the country. He was custodian of the big dam at the Loopline Road, near Kumara. for 17 years. For the last six years Mr. Barretich had been an inmate of the Old People's Home in Greymouth. His 300 th birthday was honoured with due ceremony and a cake with 100 candles was made by the matron of the home.
