DATE OF ANNIVERSARY

AUCKLAND OBSERVANCE

MAYOR SEEKS CLARIFICATION

In an effort to reach some finality on the question as to the correct day on which Auckland's anniversary should he observed, the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, has written to the Internal Affairs Department suggesting that if practicable the anniversary date should he fixed as the actual date, January 30, and not January '29, the date upon which the anniversary is now observed. Advice has been received by Mr. Davis from the Under-Secretary of the Department, Mr. J. \\. Heenan, that the matter will be considered by the National Historical Research Committee, which the Government pro ptoses to set up in connection with New Zealand's centennial. Mr. Davis said yesterday that his inquiries indicated that the proposal he had advanced was not as simple of adoption as might appear on the sur face, yet he was hopeful at least that finality would be brought to an issue that had for a long time merited official clarification.
