HOT CROSS BUNS
SUPPLIES BEING MADE
SMALLER NUMBERS THAN USUAL
Auckland householders who like to
observe the old custom of eating hot cross buns at Easter will, after all, bo able to buy supplies this Easter. At first it was thought that the high wages bakers would have to pay for additional assistance would result in the majority of them refusing to bake the buns, but it was stated yesterday that supplies would be available, although they would probably be much smaller than usual. One of the members of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association said that the payment of £'3 12s for 9.} hours' work that was required to bo made to the jobbers who were usually engaged to make the buns had resulted in his case in the intention to bake Fewer buns than usual. From what; he had heard in discussions with other bakers it would be impossible to fulfil the usual Easter requirements for the buns, as not so many were being made. This was confirmed by other members oi the association.
It was also stated that the price for the ordinary sized bun would have to be Is 3d a dozen, in order to cover increased costs. Some bakers, however, might make smallvr ones for the old price of Is a dozen.
