DEAD-HEAT IN M CLASS SUCCESS OF THE VIKING The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a cruising race to Matiatia, Waiheke, on Saturday afternoon for first and second division yachts and also a harbour race for class M. It was originally proposed to start the cruising raco on the Mark Foy system of giving the handicaps at the start, but owing to tho weather being unfavourable for this method, the boats were sent away in tho usual manner. Tho winner of the First Division wus the naval yacht Viking. Windward accounted for tho Second Division, while Muwhiti (Messrs. Thorpe Brothers) and Maratea (Mr. J. A. Kyd) dead-heated ou corrected times in the race for class M. Tho Second Division boats woro sent away First in a light southerly breeze and when the signal to start was given Peri crossed tho line half a length ahead of Altair. Then followed Janet, Mahaki, Kotuku. Dorothy, Humbler, Karero, Windward and Minerva. Kotiri canio up to the lino to start, but was disqualified for paddling after the five-, minute gun had sounded. Altair soon passed Peri and was making good progress until she ran into a calm patch. Kotuku avoided the patch and went into tho lead. Matiaki kept a little nearer the southern shore and got a nice breeze, which enabled her to draw level with Kotuku. Near Dovonport the wind fell away to a calm. Later, a steady breeze sprang up from the north and Windward. Altair and Mahaki drew away from the rest of the fleet, theso boats finishing in the order stated. The result on corrected times was:—"Windward, 1; Dorothy, 2; Rarero, 3. There was just sufficient wind to enable most of the boats in tho first division to cross tho line on time. Moana beat Waitangi over by a few feet and then came Tamatea, Little Jim, Ngatoa and Tawera. The following were late in crossing:—Ariki (3in), Viking (tm). liaweno (Tin), Victory (Dm). After the yachts had started (he wind fell away to a calm and several lost steerage-way. Later a light, northerly wind was experienced and as the afternoon wore on tho breczo increased in strength and once clear of tho harbour, tho boats were enabled to reach their destination in good time. took the lead at Dovonport and stood over toward Rangitoto and got becalmed. Ngatoa, which was holding second placo then took charge. The rest of the fleet, which had kept in the middle of the channel, closed on the leaders at this stage. Ngatoa continued her lead for some distanco and was then replaced by Waiomo. Later, Ngatoa regained her position, only to be passed by Tawera. Ariki was slowly gaining on Tawera and filially caught and passed her. This order was kept until the finish. . The raco started at 2.25 p.m. Tho finishing times were:—Ariki (scr), 4h -19 m 255; Tawera (4m), 4h 51m 8s; Ngatoa (scr), 4h 53m 5!)s; Waiomo (15m), 4h 51m 50s; Little Jim (llm), 4h 55n) 30s; Tamatea (4m), 4h 57m 10s; Moana (Om) 4h 58m 40s; Rawene (3m), 51) 1m Is; Viking (35m), 5h 5m 535; Victory (13m), oh Gin 15s; Waitangi (19m), 5h 7m 275. . . The result on corrected times was:—Vik)ng, 1; Waiomo, 2; Littlo Jim, 3. A good start was made in the race for class M. Maroro crossed tho lino at gunfire ami then followed Maratea and Manaia together with Mawhiti, Manu, Maneno and Ma ran it a all handy. The boats experienced the same light weather conditions )n the early stages as the keel yachts and when the breeze freshened Manu, which had worked out a lead shortly after the start, improved her position. POINT CHEVALIER CLUB PRESIDENT'S TROPHY DECIDED The Point Chevalier Sailinsr Club held a series of races fur yachts yesterday, starting and' finishing off the clubhouse, Point Chevalier \ll events were sailed in a fresh westerly breeze and, following the usual custom, the boats competed in a general handicap in addition to their own particular class event The 16ft S class boats raced for a trophy presented by the president, Mr. M. J- Coyle. The race started at 1.45 p.m. and the finishing times were: —Seymour (14m), 3h 21m Is; Marleno (2nO, 3h 23m Os; Ga«nett (10m), 3h 25m 15s; Mahana (scr), 3h 25m 31s; Awatea (9m), 3h 20m 325; Leone (-IVim), 3h 29h. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB Z CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP The Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club held a race for yachts on Saturday afternoon Light winds and calms were experienced and many of the competitors were unable to coryplete the course.
