WEIGHING A BABY
COMEDIAN AND ANGLER SIR HARRY LAUDER'S SCALEiS Several fishing stories were told in nn atmosphere of laughter and good fellowship that marked a reception to Sir Harry Lauder, the famous comedian, in Wellington. Mr. R. H. Nimmo, president of the Wellington Burns Club, said that, liko himself, Sir Harry Lauder was an enthusiastic angler. Anglers everywhere were popularly looked upon as peoplo given to exaggeration. Sir Harry, said Mr. Nimmo, was credited during his last visit to Taupo, where a baby had been born, with offering the use of his fishing-scales to weigh the K\by. To the consternation of the mother, the amazement of the ladies of the house, and the admilrat ion of the anglers, it was discovered that this newly-born baby -weighed no less than 451b. After expressing his thanks for his welcome to Wellington, Sir Harry referred to his fishing in New Zealand. He said he had been on some wonderful fishing expeditions with Mr. Nimmo. "Fishing is a disease," he continued. "My brother Alex had it bad. Alex would havo fished all day in the midden. He would stand; at a pool all day. I would tell him there were no fish in the pool, but he would say, 'How do you know?' I don't know everything, but I know a pool when I see it. "But there is another of them sitting here." added Sir Harry, pointing to Mr. Nimmo. "He would fish anywhere where there was an inch and a-half of water. If I tell him there are no fish there he says, 'You never know when a big one may como up.' "
