ACTION FOR LIBEL
THE FLYING DOCTOR SINGAPORE JOURNAL SUED COURT AWARDS DAMAGES By Association—Copyright (Received January 15, 7.00 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Jan. 15 Dr. Clyde Fenton, of Darwin, Australia, who is known as "the Flying Doctor," was awarded 500 dollars damages to-day against the .Straits Times in an action for lihel. This was a sequel to a report in the newspaper of his dash by air from Australia to China to the bedside of his mother, who was ill. The newspaper said Dr. Fenton piloted an aeroplane, "which was the property of the Commonwealth Government and which lis had been forbidden to use by that Government." Dr. Fenton, -who had claimed 4500 dollars damages, contended that this statement implied theft, whereas the machine was his own property. All the Commonwealth Government did was to insist upon the installation of an additional tank which he had no time to arrange. Also lie had no time to arrange to secure permits to fly over other countries.
