MURDER IN FLAT
| CONFESSION BY NEGRO COMMITTED FOR TRIAL ANGRY CROWD'S ATTACK By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 15, 6.-15 p.m.) NEW YORK. Jan. 14 A negro portei", named Green, who was employed at the apartment house in a New York suburb where Mrs. Frank Case was murdered on Tuesday, after 40 hours of intermittent questioning to-day confessed to the crime. Green said he entered the woman's Hat for the purpose of stealing. He encountered Mrs. Case and hit her on the head with a hammer. Then he strangled her and dragged her screaming to the bath tub, which he tilled with water, and drew a bedspread over her to stifle her cries. Subsequently Green named another negro as liis accomplice but the police disbelieve him and think he is trying to involve the second man because of a grudge. Less than 12 hours after his confession Green was indicted on a charge of murder in the first degree. He entered a plea of not guilty and was taken to gaol to await his trial on February 1. "While the accused was being led in the twilight from the Court to the gaol lie was surrounded by a crowd of about SO people, mostly women, who screamed imprecations and threats, including cries of "Lynch him."' He was struck on the head with umbrellas and sticks and was scratched and slapped. A patrolman to whom Green was handcuffed was the target for nearly as many blows as the accused and could not defend himself owing to the ma uacles.
Other policemen went to the rescue of their comrade and opened up a path to the gaol. Neither man was seriously hurt and no one was arrested.
