TWO CARS COLLIDE

ONE CATCHES FIRE FIVE PEOPLE INJURED POLICE MAKE AN ARREST As the result of a motor collision, following which a car caught fire, on the waterfront road at Orakei at about four o'clock on Saturday afternoon, one person was admitted to the Auckland Hospital and four others suffered minor injuries. A passonger in one car, Mrs. L. Derrick, of 44 St. Mary's Bay Road, Ponsonby, suffered head injuries and shock. The driver, Mr. N. Walker, of Kohimarama, Mrs. Walker, their infant son and another passenger, Miss B. Green, all received cuts or shock. Mrs. Derrick, who had been thrown through tho windscreen, was lifted clear just as the car burst into flames. The driver of a motor-bus stopped and put out tho flames with an extinguisher, but the collision and the fire had damaged tho car extensively. All the injured people were taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance, but, with tho exception of Mrs. Derrick, they were able to go home after receiving medical attention. Mrs. Derrick's condition last night was not serious.

Tho four occupants of tho other car wore not injured. They wore questioned by tho police. A man was subsequently arrested and will bo charged in the Polico Court this morning.

MOTOR STRIKES POLE TWO OCCUPANTS SUFFER MAN AND WIFE IN HOSPITAL [from our own correspondent] WHANGAIIEI, Saturday A motor-ear driven by Mr. Robert Girven, of Grey Lynn, collided with a telegraph polo at the corner of Otaika and M.annu Roads to-day. I\lr. and Mrs. Girven, the only occupants, were admitted to the Whaugarei Hospital Mrs. Girven suffered a fracture of the left arm and lacerations to the forearm and right hand. Mr. Girven has a cut over tho left eye and abrasions to the forehead. They were on their way north for tho holidays. THROWN FROM PILLION SEQUEL TO COLLISION YOUNG WOMAN'S INJURY [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday When the motor-cycle on which she was a pillion passenger was involved in a collision with a motor-car, Miss liilecn Staveley, aged 19, of 15 Carnot Street, Rotorua, was thrown heavily to the roadway. She was admitted to the Waikato Hospital suffering from concussion. Her condition is not serious. Tho driver of the motor-cycle was Mr. L. Henderson, of Rotorua. He was not injured.

PLUNGE FROM ROAD CAPSIZE OF VEHICLE MOTORISTS ESCAPE LIGHTLY [by telegraph OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday A motor-car full of people rolled over several times down an embankment off Cliff Road, Palmerston North, about mid-day to-day, and although the vehicle was extensively damaged, none of the occupants was seriously hurt. The driver was Mr. S. E. Crosland, of Island Bay, Wellington, and his passengers were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Dodd, their two sons and one daughter, and Miss Pearl Mclllridc, all of Wellington. Mr. Dodd and his son, Raymond, aged 11 years, suffered cuts and shock, necessitating medical attention, but all the others in the car escaped with bruises.

PEDESTRIAN INJURED STRUCK BY MOTOR-CYCLE TWO RIDERS ALSO HURT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] ASHBURTON, Sunday A middle-aged man, whose identity has not yet been established definitely, is seriously ill in hospital with head injuries received when he was knocked down by a motor-cycle at the racecourse corner last evening after the trotting. He is believed to be Mr. 11. Stewart, of Christehurch. The motor-cycle was ridden by Mr. Lawrence Fisher, of Christehurch, whose wifo was on the pillion. Both suffered injuries necessitating a dav in hospital.
