OUTRIGHT VICTORY

TEAM'S HARD FIGHT With eight wickets down for 149 runs at the end' of the first day's play, tho not out batsmen, Andrews and Smith, continued for Auckland B in its match against the Suburban Association team. In spito of many bowling changes, the pair continued aggressively, Smith in particular showing a tendency to lift the ball to the boundary. J.lie partnership added 89 runs. Andrews compiled 42, which included four boundaries, and Smith hit six boundaries in his score of 54. Finlayson endeavoured to trap the batsmen into being caught on tho boundary, but the catching was not up to standard, and several easv chances were missed. The Suburban Association team commenced its second innings 101) runs behind, ant with six wickets down for 21 runs, Auckland B appeared to have an easy innings victory. Simpson and Andrews each took three wickets. The advent of Lanijden and Robertghaw placed a different complexion on the game, and Robertshaw, with hard hitting, knocked Simpson off his length, and gained confidence to play the tricky deliveries of Andrews. Felts assisted tho batsmen by failing to a good length, and they took toll of some of his short-pitched deliveries. Langden was associated in three sound partnerships. With Robertshaw, he put on 5(5 runs, and then with Finlayson 54 were added. Langden was responsible for some hurricane hitting and compiled 34 in quick time, five of his shots crossing the line. The majority of his score was made with a hook shot. . , , Auckland B required 10 runs to gain an outright win', and two wickets fell before the total had been ?ained. BRABIN CUP MATCH AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON Favoured by excellent weather and wicket conditions, the annual cricket match for the Brabin Cup between the junior representative teams of Auckland and Wellington was commenced at Devonport on Saturday. Play was characterised by bright batting for the most part, the players attempting to take full advantage of the fast conditions. Auckland played itself into a strong position, and its opponents will need to make a recovery if they wish to avoid defeat. The toss favoured Auckland, which batted first and made 220. There were no particularly outstanding performances, but the batting was generally sound. Wellington fared badly on commencing its first innings and seemed in danger of being forced to follow on. However, the visiting team staged a slight recovery and at stumps had scored 14(i for nine wickets. Hijrgins gave Auckland a good start with a well-played innincs for 50. He was somewhat cautious at the commencement, influenced no doubt by the accuracy of the bowling, but he gained confidence as his innings progressed and opened out, revealing some excellent shots. Flyger (2S) and Smith (21) assisted the total along, the former being the more confident, while Walters, an attractive left-hander, punched the ball hard through the covers and timed nicely several shots on the leg side in scoring '_'7. The later batsmen, most of whom reached double figures, shaped aggressively. A feature of the innings was the excellent bowling of the Wellington fast trundler, Bentlcy. Possessing an excellent action, he made considerable pace off the wicket and caused an occasional delivery to lift disconcertingly in taking five wickets for 51 runs. His run, which was nearly 30 yards, was inclined to be exaggerated, but surprisingly enough he revealed excellent stamina and "at no stage could any exception be taker, to his length. It was a test of his worth when the batsmen commenced to open out and hit several boundaries off him, but he refused to drop his length. Bush also bowled Impressively in taking four wickets for 57. Frequent changes in the bowiing had the batsmen unsettled when Wellington commenced its first innings. None of the batsmen was particularly confident, and the side was soon fighting hard for runs. Denticc gave a good disin.v in scoring 32. driving and hooking cleanly, while Dyer's 20 was a valuable contribution. Bentley (23 not out) was mainlv responsible for averting the follow on. The most successful bowlers were Mutton and Hollies, who secured three and four wickets respectively. Scores:—
