MEAT FOR HOLIDAYS

BUTCHERS BUY SUPPLIES STRONG DEMAND FOR LAMB Butchers bought their meat supplies for the Christmas trade at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday, and judging by the strong demand for lamb this will be a popular article for the holidays. Five thousand lambs were sold, compared with 10.000 at last year s Christmas sale, but values were higher this year, ranging front 15s to 30s 9d each, as against 12s 6d to 26s 6d » year ago. Beef was not plentiful, and prices were very firm to 32s per 1001b., equal to those of a year ago. Both porkers and baconers were considerably more expensive than last Christmas, by about 2d per lb. The Christmas sale last year lasted from early morning until T. 40 p.m., but yesterday all stock had been sold by shortly after 6 p.m. An explanation of the smaller supplies is that this December there have been four sales, compared with three a year ago.
