PROBLEM FOR BAKERS
WORK ON CHRISTMAS EVS CASUAL EMPLOYEES' WAGES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CTirUSTCHURCH, Monday A problem confronts the bakers of Xew Zealand, for any casual worker employed by them on Christmas when a four days' supply of bread has to be made, must be paid £4 9s bd or 10 hours' work. The position arises out of the legislation which lays "down tha any casual worker employed during t 0 14 days before or after the Christmai and New Year statutory holidays nius be paid for those holidays. The executive of the New Zealan Master Bakers' Association appealed to the Minister of Labour, who state id reply that it was impossible to riff the position. A suggestion that eiD ployers should refuse to pay the 01 day rates and thereby provoke a case which would have the threshed out in Court, came before executive at its last meeting, h_ u action was approved. .
