FRANKLIN ROADS

IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

PROPOSED LOAN OF £IOO,OOO TAR-SEALING AND METALLING [HY r TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PUKEKOHE, Monday Two letters of objection were received by the Franklin County Council at its meeting to-day to its proposal to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for approval of its plan to raise £IOO,OOO for tar-sealing county main roads, reconstructing bridges and metalling long lengths of the remaining unmetallcd roads in the country. One letter was signed by 33 ratepayers at Waiau Pa and the other by one ratepayer at Waiau Pa The grounds of objection were that the rates had substantially increased this year and the writers objected to further increases. After considering the objections in committee the council unanimously resolved to proceed with its application to the Loans Board, tho objections to be sent forward to the board with tho application. The assistant engineer, Mr. A. C. Bettarty, reported that traffic on the more important roads had reached such an intensity that these roads needed grading once a day. The council was faced with having to purchase extra graders to enable this to be done, or with tarsealing tho roads. Tho latter course was tho cheaper and more satisfactory. Authority was given Mr. Bettany for calling tenders for the erection of a bridge on the road giving access to Big Bay wharf, Manukau Harbour. It was also decided to invite tenders for clearing the Mangatawhiri Stream of young willows and other growth from the Pokeno-Paeroa highway to the railway bridge at Mercer. The tar-sealing of tho road from the Waiuku Town Board boundary to tho Fernlcigh butter factory is also to bo proceeded with without delay.
