INQUIRY IN UNITED STATES 500,000 DOLLARS IN BETS (Received November 22/ 7.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 21 Inter-collegiate football is drawing larger crowds of spectators this season than ever before, and is assuming the aspects of big business. Some alumni associations are frankly subsidising star ' players. It is announced that the Carnegie Foundation ■ for the Advancement of Teaching is considering a new inquiry into professionalism in athletics at the request of the National Association of State Universities. The foundation maintains that the situation is more reprehensible than ever before and points out that bets amounting to v ,500,000 dollars on a single game are bringing about a serious danger of corruption.
