OTAMATEA COUNTY ROADS WATER SUPPLY TO RUAWAI {BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PAPAROA, Wednesday The Otamatea County Council, at its meeting to-day, was advised by the Main Highwavs Board that the following highways' would be taken over as State highways by the board as fiom November 1, and maintenance done by the council subsequent to that date would be reimbursed by the board:— Dargaxille-Maungaturoto, Grant's Corner to Hobson County boundary; Grant's Corner to Whangarei County boundary; Wairau Bridge to Grants Corner; Topuni to Wairau Bridge, Maungaturoto; total length, approximately 48 miles. The council will complete maintenance work in hand, recommend the passing over of surfacemen and others iron, the council to the board and negotiate with the latter for the taking over of certain plant and machinery not now needed by the council. Keen disappointment was expressed bv the council at ft letter from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. finmple, concerning the water supplv for Kuawni and other Northern Wairon centres, in which he stated that no subsidy could be given to the Hume Pipe Company, which was prepared to carry out the work, nor would a charter be extended to the company. Jhe Minister recommended that the of water supplv instn 1 latioi. should be undertaken b.v a local authority. It was resolved that a reply should bo drafted urging the Minister to reconsider the matter, and asking that cither the work should be taken up as a Government undertaking or a charter should be granted to the company.

G. Hultquist, M P for .the Bay of Plentv, has received advice from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R Sen)pie, stating that lie had gone into the matter carefully with the district engineer, and lie was now pleased to advise that grants of £4OO ireo had been approved for each of AYhitikau J!oiU | and Wilton's Road, these grants replacing the original grants of £2OO on a pound for pound basis.
