USELESS CHEQUE CASHED TERM OF IMPRISONMENT Charges of obtaining £l3 10s Sd from the New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association of Canterbury by falsely representing that a cheque was valid, and of being a rogue and a vagabond at Rotorua and Auckland by falsely representing that lie was empowered to collect for the St. John Ambulance Association, were admitted in the Police Court yesterday by Cyril Lewis "Walter Withall, cook, aged 38. Detective-Sergeant Meiklcjolm said accused called on the Farmers' Cooperative Association in Christchnrch and said be wished to pay £o oli his account. As he tendered a cheque tor £lB 10s Bd, he was given the balancv in cash, but it was later found that the cheque form had been stolen from n book belonging to a cycle dealer When in Uotorua on October z4 ne went from house to house collecting, representing that the money was tor the St. John Ambulance Association After collecting 9s be came to Auckland and repeated the practice. He had a bad list of previous convictions. ( Accused was sentenced to six months imprisonment, to be followed by two years' reformative detention, on the major charge and convicted and discharged on the others. The magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, made an order that lis 2d found in his possession should <r o to the St. John Ambulance Association.
