BURGLARS IN SHOP
ATTEMPT TO OPEN SAFE EXPLOSION JAMS DOOR Burglars who broke into the butcher's shop of R. and W. Hollaby, Limited, at the corner of St. Jude Street and St. George Road, Avondale, early yesterday morning and attempted to blow open the safe went unrewarded, for the gelignite blew off the lock ancl the door-covering, but jammed the internal mechanism and prevented the safe from being opened. A draper, Mr. J. F. Atkinson, who lives opposite, heard an explosion at about three o'clock, but when he looked out of a window and did not see anyone or any lights he concluded the soupcg of the noise was some distance away, so he went back to bed. There is the suggestion that this and several other attempts at safebreaking within tho past few weeks were the work of persons unskilled in the use of gelignite, for in most instances too much explosive was used and the locks jammed. The safe at tho Baptist Tabernacle, which was blown to pieces on Sunday night, is a case in point. The one at Hellaby's had to bo opened by a locksmith yesterday morning
