TRADE NEGOTIATIONS
AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN HOPES OF SETTLEMENT TOKIO, Nov. 1(> The Government spokesman intimated to-day that the trade negotiations between Australia and Japan were approaching a satisfactory conclusion. It is expected that a settlement of the dispute between Japan and Australia will be reached on the basis ol an expansion of the quota originally offered by Australia for the admission of Japanese cotton and rayon textiles. This quota was 80,000,000 square yards, but it was understood at the time that this figure had been fixed for bargaining purposes, and was not intended to represent Australia's final offer. Japan, which originally declined to discuss the dispute on a quota basis, later agreed to do so, and it is now believed that a compromise may be reached on a level of up to 120,000,000 square yards.
