TAUPIRI DRAINAGE
COMPLETION OP SCHEME DEPARTMENT TO WITHDRAW LOCAL BOARD'S VIEWS [llY TfU.KORAPH —PRKSS ASSOCIATION] HAMILTON, Tuesday An intimation that iho Public Works Department would complete its work in connection with the comprehensive scheme for drainage of the 'laupiri swamp in a few months was received at a meeting of the Taupiri Drainage and River Board. The chairman, Mr. li. I!. W. Heid, reported that he and Mr. H. G. Young had visited Auckland, and had asked the district engineer, Mr. I''. S. Dyson, to agree to the department forming the subsidiary drains in the area. Mi. Dyson declined the request,, and said the department intended to withdraw from the locality as soon as the original scheme for the construction of the main drains was completed. Members of the board expressed the opinion that tho accommodation provided by the department did not comply with the requirements laid down by recent legislation, and that the department desired to avoid the expense which would bo involved in rebuilding the present hutments. This, it was contended, was one reason why the department wished to terminate the woik in hand as soon as possible. The board decided to approach the Minister of Public 'Works, the Hon. LSemplc, and arrange an interview with him when lie visited the 1 Waikato, with a view to having the decision of tho department reversed.
