KILLED BY TRAM
ELDERLY MAN'S FATE HOLIDAY IN CITY SISTER SLIGHTLY HUET ACCIDENT NEAR KINGSWAY While running to catcli a citybonnd tramcar which was travelling along Three Kings Road, near Kingsway, about 12.50 p.in. yesterday, two elderly people, a man and his sjster, wero struck by a tram going in the opposite direction. Mr. James Given, aged 78, of Pollok Settlement, near Waiuku, suffered severe head injuries and died shortly after admission to the Auckland Hospital. His sister, Miss Susan Given, aged 70, of Qtieensway, Three Kings, was only slightly injured. Both Mr. and Miss Given wero knocked to the ground, but Mr. Given received the full force of the impact. There was no traffic besides the two trams at the time of the accident. Both the injured people were taken to the hospital by a St. John ambulance, but Miss Given was later able to go to her home. Mr. Given had farmed in Pollok Settlement all his life. He took over the management of the farm bought by his father many years before. He took an active part in the affairs of the district and served for some time on the local road board. He had recently come to Auckland for a holiday and was staying with his sister.
