AUSTRIA'S DAY
FESTIVAL OF REPUBLIC COMMISSIONER'S RECEPTION The 18th anniversary of the proclamation of the Austrian Federal Republic was celebrated in Auckland yesterday. Flags were flown over the various consulates and members of the Consular Corps in the morning paid complimentary calls upon tho Austrian Trade Commissioner, Mr ('• J Thedens. In the afternoon Mr." 'ami Mrs. Ihedens entertained over 100 guests at a reception in Milne and Choyce s Reception Hall. Mr. H L E. Priest man, assistant Canadian lrade Commissioner, who has been transferred to Sydney, and Mrs. Priestman were guests of honour. Among those present were tho Attornev-Gen-eral, tho Hon. H. G. 11. Mason, tho Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, members of tho Consular Corps and representatives of Government departments, local bodies and the commercial community. Mr. Thedens, in a brief speech, said tho occasion gave him feelings of pride and happiness, not only because it was tho Austrian National Day, but also because it gave one who had been originally a foreigner in New Zealand the opportunity to express, in a small arid modest way, his gratitude and sincore appreciation to the people of the Dominion for their invariable hospitality and kindness to foreigners of every nationality. Mr. Thedens expressed regret at the coming departure of Mr. and Mrs. Priest man and wished them a happy future, with the assurance that their many Auckland friends would not forget them. All stood while the played tho British and Austrian National Anthems.
