STATE HIGHWAY
ROAD DECLARED IN NORTH NVHANGAREI TO KAITAIA [bv telegraph—own correspondent] KAITAIA, Wednesday The Main Highways Board has notified the local authorities concerned that the road from Whangarei to Kaitaia, via Kawakawa, has been declared a State highway as from November 1. This means that this route will no longer be any charge on the local authority through whose area it traverses. This is not the route of the north main highway, which runs up through the centre of the island. It was understood that no action would be taken to declare any route until the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, had traversed all the proposed routes and decided after this inspection on the route to be declared a State highway. Three routes were suggested—that by the east coast, that by the west coast, and the main route through the centre of the area, and the Minister had promised a deputation that approached him while ho was in the North that he would personally inspect the routes before any decision was arrived at.
