RELIEF PROBLEM
LOCAL BODIES' ATTITUDE SURVEY BY LABOUR MEMBERS A close survey of what local bodies arc doing in the way of unemployment relief is to be made by all Labour members of Parliament when visiting their constituencies during the recess, according to a statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, published in the Standard. Unemployment is to bo one of the questions discussed at the special Labour caucus which is to bo held at Wellington on November 25. Referring to the purpose of the meeting, Mr. Savage is credited by the Standard with saying that there lias been a tendency tor local bodies to do nothing fresh in the way of unemployment relief since Labour went into power. The Government had been dealing with unemployment continuously and while all members wero visiting the constituencies they would be making a close survey of what local bo<lies were doing in this direction, and would not only be finding out what jobs could be undertaken, but would also bo appealing to local bodies to get on the move. Although the caucus had not been called solely to discuss unemployment, there being many questions to deal with, unemployment would certainly b« reviewed, and Mr. Savngo said ho was hopeful that more rapid progress might be made as a result.
