SURGEON'S DEATH
MR. CASEMENT AICKIN r A BRILLIANT CAREER HIGH PLACE IN PROFESSION One of Auckland's best-known surgeons, Mr. Casement Gordon Aickin, died at his residence .'39 Svmonds Street shortly after midnight. He had been ill for a week and died of pneumonia. Mr. Aickin, who was Go years of age, was the son of Mr. Casement Aickin, of C. Aickin, Limited, and a grandson of Dr. Thomas Aickin. He was born at Mount Albert and was educated at the Mount Kden School, the Auckland Grammar School, and gained a university entrance scholarship at St. John's College. Mr. Aickin's brilliant academic career began at the Auckland University College, where lie took a preliminary scientific course for one year before entering the University of Otago, where lie graduated in 1909. For two years lie was attached to the staff of the Auckland Hospital, as resident medical officer, and in 1911 lie went to London, where he obtained a fellowship of the Itoyal College of Surgeons in tho following year. On his return to New Zeabind he acted as ship's surgeon on the ship l'akeha, and subsequently rejoined the Auckland Hospital staff. During the Great War Mr. Aickin served on the New Zealand general hospital staff iu London, and again on his return to New Zealand, served in the Auckland Hospital. Of recent years he had been in practice as a consulting surgeon. Mr. Aickin was appointed an honorary Fellow of tho American College of Surgeons, and was made a Fellow of the Koyal Australasian College of Surgeons upon its foundation. He held office as president of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, and served as president of the Auckland Clinical Society. JH e was also patron of .several sports bodies. Mr. Aickin's one hobby was prize stock breeding, and his Jersey stud at "Tauwhare," Woodhill, was known throughout the Dominion. In 1908 Mr. Aickin married Miss Catherine Broun, daughter of Major Broun, of Auckland. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Mr. F. C. Aickin and Mr. L. H. Aickin, and a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Aickin, who left Sydney yesterday on her way home.
