HOURLY PAYMENTS r RULING OF COURT p RELATION OF BASIC WAGE r An important memorandum on the subject of the position of casual workers who are employed under an award in relation to the basic rate of wages has been issued by the Court of Arbitration. It was made in respect of the Wellington Chemical, Condiment, Sauce and Pickle Workers' award. The memorandum states that awards covering workers similar to those covered by the award are in force in other districts. It thinks the industry is one that might well be covered by a Dominion award. The Court was asked to clarify, in relation to the recently fixed basic rate of wages, the position of casual workers employed under the award. The award fixes the rate of wages for casual workers at 2s (3d an hour for adult male workers and Is .'3d an hour for adult female workers. Tho basic rate of wages fixed by the Court is £3 I (is a week for adult malo workers and £1 16s a week for adult females. The fixation of such basic rate of wages does not mean that casual workers covered by the ward must be paid not less than £.'3 IGs and £1 16s respectively for each week in which any work is done by them, states the memorandum. They are entitled to be paid 2s 6d an hour and Is 3d an hour respectively for the number of hours actually worked by them.
