DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER

VISIT BY VISCOUNT DILLON NOTED CAREER IN ARMY [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Sept. 16 Viscou nt and Viscountess Dillon have left for a trip to New Zealand, and they will be away until the spring. Viscount Dillon, whose home is in Oxfordshire, is the 19th holder of the title, which was created in 1622. Viscount Dillon is a distinguished soldier. He entered the Jray in 1899 and served in the South African War. He attained the rank of captain in 1905 and colonel in 1922. For services in South Africa he received the Queen's Medal and four clasps. During the Great War he gained the D.S.O.j the C.M.G. and was mentioned seven times in despatches. He has French and Belgian decorations as well. Viscount Dillon was General Staff Officer, first grade, with the British Army of the Rhine, and also with the First Division, Aldershot. He also held the post of military assistant to the Chief of the General Staff. In 1925 he retired, and in 1930 he received appointment to His Majesty's Bodyguard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms. Viscountess Dillon was a daughter of the late Brigadier-General C. E. Beckett and Mrs. Beckett.
