INTER-CLUB GOLF
MATCH FOR HANNA MUG TITIRANGI DEFEATS AUCKLAND BY THE BOVBB The inter-club match for the Hanna Mug, a contest between teams representing the Titirangi and Auckland Golf Clubs, is a popular event with these clubs, and during the week-end Titirangi won for the second time this season.
Id the singles played in the morning, A. Harvey nad a round in the low seventies to defeat E. L. Bartleet at the 16th. Although he does not possess a convincing swing, Harvey obtained his figures with ease, his iron play and green work particularly being of a high standard. Bartleet hit al few loose iron shots, but he kept his 'opponent busy ► up to thp finish. In their five previous meetings, B. H. Menzies had defeated J. H. Young on each occasion, but Young completely outplayed his opponent in this match and won convincingly. Young was driving a very long ball and his putting was much sounder than usual. In the afternoon fourball, Young was responsible for a brilliant round of 70 and, as he and his partner finished 8 up on bogey, the Auckland pair, Bartleet and Menzies, had little chance against them. E. S. Toogood, who was making his first appearance for Auckland, found the conditions somewhat strange, and in the circumstances he did well to take the ex-champion of Titirangi, J. M. Coltman, to the 18th green. Coltman had a useful lead of 3 up at the 12th, but his opponent not only wiped off the deficit, but he also held the advantage after the 16th. Three putts on the 17th by Toogood enabled Coltman to square the match, and the Titirangi player won on the last green when his opponent misjudged his second, the ball finishing out-of-bounds. In defeating R. R. McCrystal. P. C. Savage played soundly to score tne first win for the visitors, and I. MacEwan added another to the tally after a peculiar match with E. G. Tallin. In this game, the 9th was the only hole halved, first one player and then the other having the advantage. The result of all square in the match between T. Morpeth and W. A. Donald gives a fair indication of the run of play, but both are capable of much better golf- than was produced on the day. For Titirangi and Auckland respectively, J. Galloway and R. D. Wright were dormy one on W. N. Abbott -and H. L. Robson, but in each case the game finished square. Ability to hole four and five-foot putts enabled R. D. Horton to defeat N. A. Naismith and superior iron play was the m :nn reason for E. Hutchison's win at the expense of S. S. Wilson. . A. L. McLean and A. E. Saunders had a very even game, Saunders having a slight lead to the 15th, butf the players were all square approaching the last green, where McLean missed a simple putt for a win. F. W. Lucas led m the early stages of his match with H. V. Coverdale, who, however, had an advantage of one hole at the 13th. Lucas finished better to win at the last hole. The homo side combined well in the afternoon four-ball matches. Donald and MacEwan were the only successful Auckland pair, while Horton and Wilson finished all square. The Titirangi B team also had a slight advantage at Middlemore, where it won bv one game. Ihe aggregate score was 17 games to seven in favour of Titirangi, while eight were all square.
