WORK AT NORTHCOTE ' The most important part of the work of the Northcote Welfare League was the quiet way in which cases wero helped, stated the president, Mrs. A. J. Beck, in paying a tribute at the annual meeting to the tact and efficiency of the various helpers, and of pleasure at the harmonious co-opera-tion which had maintained the happy feelings existing between committee and members. More help had been given by the public, including donations of £7 8s 6d from the committee of the annual ball of tho spinsters and bachelors, and £1 8s 4d from tho Northeoto boot pool, and Miss Trounson had regularly contributed. The principal sourco of cash was that received from the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment lielief Committee. More appeals had been made than in previous years for medicine, for winter firing, and for boots, shoes and clothing. Material had been distributed for summer clothing foxwomen and children. With new conditions and highor wages,_ and families receiving more financial assistance, better times should be experienced during the ensuing year. However, there were a number of men on sustenance, for whose families assistance would be required, including tho provision of shoes and children's clothes for the summer. Included in relief given during tho past year were: — Seventy-five bass of firewood, over 2000 pints of milk, 81 orders for groceries, orders for meat, medicine, fruit and vegetables to nursing mothers, boot repairs, ferry fares, nursing help, medical advice and payment for removal of furniture and cartage of firewood. The distribution had been made of sheets, towels, pillow cases, flannel, wool, materials, shoes, underclothing, boys' trousers, kapok for beds, ladies' coats, cotton, buttons, etc., as well as a great number of second-hand goods, including beds and bedding.
