FUNDS FOR HOCKEY. TEAM CRITICISM OF PROPOSAL > The decision reached at the Dominion conference of hockey delegates to make a levy on all players over 16 years of age i:n order to raise funds to send' a New Zealand team to the next Olympic Games in Japan has come under considerable and thoughtful criticism by both officials and players of the game. The actual levy is not the point of contention. It is the question of the benefit accruing from having representation at the Olympic Games. ' -a To send a team to Tokio will mean a contingent of about 20 players and officials. The cost of such a venture would be considerable. It/ is not, however, the actual financial burden, but whether the money could not be put to a better purpose ir. fostering hockey in New Zealand. There is little doubt that the visit of the All India team to the Dominion last year proved mosl beneficial to hockey. Various small subassociations were giv<sn an opportunitj of seeing how hockey should be played, while the general public was able to form a much more favourable impression of the game. The despatch of a team to th« Olympic Games would benefit only about 16 actual players. A number of these would probably retina the same seasor and the game generally, in . tht Dominion would not derive much benefit. It has long .been recognised that good grounds make for better hockey, so that here again is another avenue in which the money could be bettei spent.
Furthermore, it is:, doubtful whethei there wiH be a grea.t deal of competition for hockey supremacy at the next Olympic Games. (Jentrally situated, Berlin offered little difficulty to Continental countries, but the same countries may not see their way clear to send teams to Tokio. New Zealand's chances of victory a>t the games, judging on last year's. :form, are not particularly bright. If met on good, hard
and fast grounds the Indians would be a combination whose strength was never revealed here last season.
