OBITUARY

MR., W. H, MAY

The death has occurred of Mr. William Henry May, a resident of Mangere for over 60 years. Born in Cornwall, he came to New Zealand in the ship Spray of the the Ocean in 1859 and went to live at Mount Boskill. Later he moved to Mangere, where he carried on a contracting business. Mr. May was a wellknown competitor at local sports meetings and in 1886 he won the champion cup and other trophies in the ploughing contests which were held in the district. For a number of years he served on the Mangere Road Board and on several school committees. t

MR. JOHN WALLACE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The death occurred in Hamilton today of Mr. John Wallace, at the age of 90. Mr. Wallace was born at sea in the Bay of Biscay, his mother being attended by the late Sir John Logan Campbell, who was on. board the ship. At the age of 18, Mr. Wallace joined the Californian Bangers. For three years he fought with Colonel Cameron's forces against the Maoris in the Wanganui and Taranaki districts, and then joined the Alexandra Cavalry. Ho spent most of his youug manhood in the Wanganui district, and for 40 years ho lived in Taranaki, most of that time being occupied in farming near New Plymouth, Mrs. Wallace died some years ago. Mr. Wallaco is survived by ten children. There are numerous grandchildren andgreat-* grandchildren.

Of his family of three sons and one daughter, one son, Mr. Stanley Wilkinson, was managing director of tho firm of J/PattrAj and Sons at Christchurch, but died in July, 1928. Another, the Rev.-'Fraok H. Wilkinson, is at present stationed at Timaru, while the third, Mr. Maurice Wilkinson, is with J. Pattray and Sous' Christchurch ofiice. His daughter is' Mrs. A. M.
