ONEHUNGA INTERESTS
QUESTION OF HOUSING NO ACTION BY COUNCIL 1 ' The Onehunga Borough Council at its meeting last evening considered the question of instituting a housing scheme in the terms of the State Advances Corporation's suggestion. The council decided that it could not see its way to undertake such a scheme at present.
It was decided that, wherever practicable, the 40-hour week be adopted for the council's staff and be confined to five days in each week, and that in cases where Saturday morning work was necessary equivalent time off be allowed.
The Minister of Health, replying to the council's letter, which asked that ratepayers be relieved of part or the whole of the contributions now made toward hospital expenditure, stated that it was not proposed to make any alteration in the present system. In response to the Mount Roskill Road Board's, request for a conference to discuss the question of erecting a tram shelter at Royal Oak, at was decided that a conference was not required and the board was requested to state the amount it was prepared to contribute toward the cost of the shelter.
The Mayor, Mr. J. Park, welcomed the newly appointed borough engineer, Mr. H. R. Bach, who commenced his duties yesterday, and assured him of the hearty co-operation of the council.
An invitation was accepted to be represented at a meeting organised by the New Zealand Defence League for the purpose of setting up a committee to form an Auckland branch of the league.
